“We have travelled up and down this bit of the coast for many years and had no idea this was here”.
“It’s like a hidden gem isn’t it?”
These are comments we have heard from guests many times and it got us thinking. Sometimes when you live somewhere for a long time you get complacent about it. Complacent about living right next to the beach. Complacent about the amazing sunsets we have every night. Complacent about the accessibility we have to London, Brighton and the airports.
Silly really: Whenever friends and family come to stay, they always say it’s like coming on holiday!
We also did a bit of travelling to Devon and Cornwall this summer. There is no denying it’s gorgeous and it does have the one thing we don’t… waves! So, why would you come to us? What can we offer that you can’t get down there? What are the benefits of a Driftwood Stays summer holiday?
So firstly the narrow lanes in the West Country can be a challenge. We went in August this year and there was a fair amount of reversing to be had at times!
The drive there can be brutal in peak season. Thinking back to when our kids were young – this is not so fun with little ones asking “are we there yet” every 5 minutes.
Our holiday cottages are just a 90 mins drive from London and easy to get to from Gatwick or Heathrow airports or by train.
There is no denying the beaches in Cornwall are gorgeous with their golden sand and high cliffs but very often it’s a long walk from the VERY expensive car park. With all the clobber you need to take for a beach day with kids this can be challenging. Stay in Driftwood Corner and it’s 150m to the beach. Forgotten something? No problem – pop back. Want to get out of the sun for lunch? Head back to the house and get under the sunshade on the patio in the garden.
Unless you have very deep pockets you’re pretty much driving to the beach every day, as if you want a rental house right by the beach in Cornwall or Devon, you are going to be paying for it and some! Most family houses are a distance from the beach. Every time you want to go and do something you have to get in the car and navigate the narrow lanes.
We can honestly say that we have had several guests come and stay with us who have shown up, parked the car, and not got in it again for the rest of the week. The dog friendly beach is on your doorstep, the village is an easy 8 minute stroll where you have a choice of pubs, restaurants, takeaways, cafes and a convenience store. And the village itself is super dog friendly, so you can bring all members of the family and everyone can join in with everything!
If the weather is not so good for beach days – as it wasn’t a few times for our guests this summer, you have so many activities and places to visit nearby, that you will struggle to do everything in a week’s stay.
Some of our most popular family activities this year were visiting Arundel Castle, pottery painting in Worthing, and the miniature railway at Littlehampton.
